Seahawks will be in the playoff race!

By the time late December rolls around Seattle Seahawk fans will once again be dreaming sweet dreams of playoffs, and victories and Super Bowls. All the Pete Carroll

Seattle Seahawks return from the dead

detractors will be silenced and Tavaris Jackson will have some people wondering if HE shouldn’t be our quarterback of the future. The Seahawks will be on a five game winning streak, and have a winning record. And if you believe that…you’re not a dreamer…just a knowledgable football fan.

Yesterday’s surprising win over the playoff bound Baltimore Ravens didn’t make me delirious. There is really good cause to predict that the 3-6 Seattle football team will reverse its thus far lackluster season and become a playoff contender. Let’s look at the evidence.

  • In the past 7 games Hawks are an unremarkable, but not embarrassing 3-4
  • They should be 4-3 having had the Cleveland game stolen from them by a bad officiating call that took away a late game touchdown.
  • They lost two of their last four losses by a combined 5 points.
  • They’ve been competitive in every game.
  • They beat a playoff bound NY Giants team in New York.
  • They beat division leader Baltimore one week after the Ravens beat the defending AFC Champion Steelers in Pittsburgh.
  • The Seahawk defense has been stout all year.
  • The Seattle offense is improving in exactly the areas in which it needs to improve.
And, the number one reason for my optimism that the Seahawks can become playoff contenders by the week before Christmas…their schedule. Seattle plays its next four games against teams with an equal or worse record and three of them are at home. Seattle’s schedule gets considerably easier from this point forward. Seattle plays four of its last seven games at home at CenturyLink Field (still doesn’t feel right calling it that). They play two of the next four games against the St. Louis Rams, who have won only 2 games this season. After next weeks trip to St. Louis the Washington Redskins travel across country with their losing record, and Mike Shanahan‘s job slipping from his fingertips. Then on a Thursday night primetime game when the Seattle sellout crowd will be at its most fever pitch the 3-6 Philadelphia Eagles and Michael Vick come to town. I am quite certain that the Puget Sound’s dog loving, liberal protest-loving, environmentalist wacko population will rain some seriously bad karma down on the Philly QB, with a history of animal abuse. And the Seahawks defense will make Vick’s erratic throwing pay big dividends for the home team, with turnovers. Following Philadelphia the Hawks will be riding a four game losing streak and will be hosting the Rams. They won’t lose THAT game.
That takes us to late December; December 18th specifically. On that date Seattle will be in Chicago playing the increasingly tough Bears. And it WILL BE COLD!!! I do expect Seattle’s win streak and playoff hopes to end in the Windy City. But if they don’t….if they somehow manage to pull that game out of their hats…well…Seattle could run the table. The 49ers will be in Seattle the next week, having long ago clinched the division crown. Then they close the season in Arizona. Win!
Ultimately though I don’t think Seattle will make the playoffs, I do think they can make the late season interesting since they now seem to know how to run the football, and Jackson will continue to play at a level that will compare reasonably well with the Matt Hasselback of the past couple years. And having something to cheer for late in any sports season in Seattle is a Christmas present no matter what the time of year.
Go HAWKS!
11/19/11- Since writing this post the Seahawks have lost the right side of their line. It doesn’t change my opinion. Since starting right guard John Moffitt and starting right tackle James Carpenter were declared out for the year the Seahawks have received news of the Rams losing a starting tackle and another cornerback. The Rams have 9 count ’em, NINE cornerbacks on the injured list this year. And as was pointed out above the Seahawks play the Rams twice in the next four games.
Since the blog was originally posted it’s also been revealed that Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has cracked ribs. Seattle plays Vick and the 3-6 Eagles in 2 weeks.
Seattle WILL be in the playoff race four weeks from now riding a five game winning streak. Then who knows…
Optimism beats pessimism.
11/20/11- One down, three to go. Did you see anything today that would lead you to believe St. Louis could beat Seattle when they come northwest December 11? Nope. So with great confidence in that game the Seahawks still need to win home games against a 3-7 Redskins team, and a 3-6 Eagles. I may be crazy but I think the 4-6 Hawks can beat those teams, both of whom are flying all the way across the country.

Joe Paterno Fired: Penn State Students Riot in Protest – Yahoo! News

I take no satisfaction in this coaching legend having been fired after writing about it. The whole story is a tragedy. But it was the right decision.

Joe Paterno Fired: Penn State Students Riot in Protest – Yahoo! News.

Joe Paterno has forfeited the right to retire. He needs to be fired!

Paterno dodges questions

Joe Paterno avoids questions yesterday.

Legendary Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno may not have committed a crime, but he certainly betrayed a trust. News out this morning that he has decided to retire at the end of this season galls me, and turns my stomach. When you allow a child molester to continue hurting children and turn away from such hurtful crimes you are showing that you are no longer deserving of being paid your wages with the tax payers dollars. I hope the Penn State University Trustees act immediately and forcibly retire this old man and any other university employee who knew of the child assault on their own campus and did nothing about it.

Last Saturday the news of this story broke publicly. Jerry Sandusky a 23 year coach on Joe Paterno’s perennial major college power house football team was arrested and charged with 40 counts of child assault or molestation involving 8 boys ranging from 8 to 14 years of age. The crimes allegedly took place over an extended period of years. Included in the allegations was an incident in 2002 in which a 28-year-old assistant coach on the Paterno staff witnessed Sandusky in the Penn State locker room shower sexually assaulting a boy he identified as being approximately 10 years old. The coach didn’t intervene to protect the boy. He didn’t call police. He called the King of the campus. He called his boss…the next day. Joe Paterno was told in 2002 that his long time friend and colleague, Sandusky, was seen molesting a child in the shower on the campus of Penn State University, where Paterno has been the head coach longer than most humans have been alive. Paterno told his boss, Athletic Director Tim Curley. Neither Paterno nor Curley called police. Nor did they take action against Sandusky. Sandusky, who retired in 1999 but continued to live near by the school, continued to have unfettered access to the campus and to the football program. Sandusky was seen working out at the school only last week.

Curley and another University official were arrested Saturday, too, for allegedly lying to a Grand Jury. They both immediately resigned from the University in order to pursue their legal defense of the perjury charges. Paterno was charged with nothing. The Pennsylvania state police commissioner said Paterno fulfilled his legal requirement when he relayed to university administrators that a graduate assistant had seen Sandusky attacking a young boy. But the commissioner also questioned whether Paterno had a moral responsibility to do more.

Of course he had a moral responsibility to do more. It’s outrageous that anyone would allow for more innocent children to be hurt by this bastard Sandusky. In the 1990s Sandusky established a non-profit foundation to help troubled youth in the Western Pennsylvania community and surrounding areas. Police allege he used this foundation in order to gain access to his victims. Paterno knew of this foundation. And he knew of the sexual assault in the shower. An imbecile with an IQ of 20 could come to the conclusion that Sandusky shouldn’t be allowed to be around kids from his foundation or anywhere else.

Joe Paterno has won more football games as a head coach than anyone in history. He’s won National Championships. He has represented his school well for 50+ years. But he chose to protect a friend over children. I suspect he chose to protect his own legacy over the lives of innocents. Molestation of a child is as fowl a crime as a human being can commit and to tacitly endorse it with your silence is not honorable and is not worthy of continued employment. As Paterno is shown the door someone should ask him “What if that was YOUR 10-year-old son in the shower with Sandusky?”, “What if it were your Grandson, nephew, or little brother?”

Thanks for visiting. Comments are welcome.

Best World Series Game 6 Ever!

Last night’s World Series game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers was why so many of us enjoy sports. The sheer excitement, the drama, the edge or your seat suspense was all incredible. Then the sudden unexpected conclusion with the walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning off the bat of St Louis hometown boy David Freese made for a memorable evening I’ll not soon forget.

I was jumping up and down mad in the bottom of the tenth inning when Rangers Manager Ron Washington made the correct call and decided to intentionally walk Albert Pujols. By most people’s estimation Pujols is the games best player and after only 11 years in the big leagues is considered a sure Hall of Famer. So here he was stepping to the plate with two out and a runner on 2nd, bottom of the 10th inning and his team trailing by a run. With Pujols facing free agency in the off-season and possibly in his last at-bat as a Cardinal the situation was absolutely delicious. But Washington took that taste right out of my mouth. Of course, I know it was the right thing for him to do. But karma can be a bitch sometimes. By taking away the drama of Pujols either being the hero or the goat (though the final out would hardly qualify him as the goat) Washington had the baseball Gods come back and slap him. Lance Berkman hit a double tying the game, and of course the Cardinals went on the win it and force tonight’s game seven.

As wonderful as last nights game was I will not call it the Best World Series game, or game 6, I’ve ever personally witnessed. Heck, it’s not even 2nd best. My BEST, and the best of so many other people, is the 12 inning Boston Red Sox win over the Big Red MachineCincinnati Reds, in 1976. I was only 12 years old but I still remember how exhilarating it was to watch. Of course, like so many others Carlton Fisk became one of my favorites, one of my heroes, with his home run the he willed fair with hand, hip and heart. It was beautiful.

And who can forget the 1986 Game 6 win of the New York Mets over the Boston Red Sox, the night I became convinced there really was a CURSE. People forget that the final Bill Buckner between the legs whiff was only the last of a series of Red Sox gaffes that enable the Mets to come back from the brink of losing the World Series to eventually winning it.

Of course in 1976 The Big Red Machine won Game 7 and the World Series cementing their legacy as one of the greatest teams ever. The Mets won Game 7 in 1986. How could they not? So what’s going to happen tonight? Based on history, there’s no telling. But I like the chances of the Cardinals. I’ll be watching. That’s for sure.
