An Anniversary with Two Related Meanings

Martin Luther King leaning on a lectern. Deuts...

April 4 on any year’s calendar has two meanings to me. Both are important and both are related. To the rest of America April 4th is the day in which Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was assassinated on a motel terrace in Memphis, Tennessee, 45 years ago today. While his greatness is undeniable; his martyrdom sealed with absolute certainty that he would never be forgotten.

April 4th is also my wedding Anniversary. The best day of my life was when Miss Sonja Fleming agreed to love me and keep me and honor me and wear my ring for the rest of my life. Twenty-six years later we have enjoyed lots of love and traditions, made our own traditions, raised three kids and stayed together. The staying together part is wonderful and a blessing. But I think my wife would agree it wasn’t a fairy tale. As with all successful marriages we’ve overcome some challenges; though we had more than many.

Our 1 and only brief moment to sit during our wedding & receptionThese two anniversaries are related in that Sonja is black, and I am white. At the time of Martin Luther King’s death such a union was extremely rare, and socially unacceptable in the eyes of most Americans. In 1958 only 4% of Americans approved of interracial marriage. By 1968 that figure had only grown to 20%. At that time it was only one year removed from the U.S. Supreme Court making it legal for people of different races to wed. Remarkably there are still 16% of Americans who don’t approve of my marriage. Something I share with my children all the time is the fact that in 1987, when Sonja and I said our “I do’s”, interracial marriage was still rare and still disapproved of by most Americans. I tell my kids this, and they nod, but I can tell they haven’t a clue. How could they? But even those who are my age or older have forgotten what pioneers we were and what obstacles existed as late as 1987.

I maintain Martin Luther King’s death made our marriage and it’s longevity possible. His death was so horrible and so universally scorned that even the hateful racists or the indifferent idiots were forced to shut-up over changes that happened far too slowly.

Much to my embarrassment and frustration my father was one of the majority who didn’t approve of the marriage of a white man (especially his son) to a black woman. Eight years later my brother married a woman of Philippine decent. And my Dad showed no signs of disapproving. At the time I asked why it was wrong for me to marry a black woman but OK in his mind for my brother to marry a woman with darker skin, and asian. To his credit my father said , “You were Jackie Robinson. You showed that it’s OK”. I loved him for saying what was possibly the very best thing he could have said.

Funny how that happens. Things change in society. Some are decidedly bad. But some things we only think are bad at the time change is occurring. Time and example prove the changes were OK at worst, good at best. In other words, the masses are often wrong.

I was only four years old at the time of Martin Luther Kings death. But by the time I was 19 Ronald Reagan had signed a bill into law creating a national holiday in his name. Funny, that was opposed too.

Race in this country is sadly still a huge issue. And being on the front lines of the issue for more than 26 years I can tell you how sad I find it. For there can be no denying that the ugly face of racism still exists. But I don’t believe it hampers the advancement of most African-Americans from achieving their dreams and goals for success. I do believe the belief, in and of itself, by many blacks that racism holds them back is in fact what holds them back.

The fact that I’m married to a black woman for 26 years and the father of three kids who society calls black does not insulate me from criticism from some in the black community for holding this belief. One need only look at the fierce attacks

Ben Carson

Dr. Ben Carson

Dr. Benjamin Carson received for speaking of Conservative Christian values at the National Prayer breakfast in front of President Obama to know I’m somewhat doomed.

Race in this country can live up to Martin Luther King’s dream when and only when African-Americans collectively recognize that racism will never be fully eradicated. Idiots and hate have existed throughout history. But to point accusatory fingers at every person and incident and scream “racism” at every slight only frustrates everyone and keeps innocent people on the defensive and pushes them away. For instance, today’s higher rate of poverty among blacks is less the result of societal racism and more the result of the astounding rate of single-mother and teen births.

A graph showing percentage of single mothers by race.

A graph showing percentage of single mothers by race.

As of 2010 72.5% percent of black children are born to single mothers. It’s 29% for whites, 53.3% for Hispanics. Not one single white person, racist or not is responsible for this horrible fact. And it’s horrible because 64% of single mothers and their children live in poverty, regardless of race.

Progress has been made in race relations since the death of Martin Luther King and since the 1987 marriage of Sonja and I. A black President with a traditionally Muslim name is fair evidence of this fact. But on this day every year, I want more and better. And from this non-racist white guys perspective the African-American collective bares the burden of making this happen. Not entirely, just most of the heavy lifting.

Cardinal Dolan’s Prayer Closing the Democrat National Convention

Cardinal Dolan also delivered the benediction at the Republican National Convention a week earlier.

Timothy Dolan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ne...

Timothy Dolan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York

“With a ‘firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,’ let us close this convention by praying for this land that we so cherish and love,” Cardinal Dolan began at the Democratic convention, continuing:

Let us Pray.

Almighty God, father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, revealed to us so powerfully in your Son, Jesus Christ, we thank you for showering your blessings upon this our beloved nation. Bless all here present, and all across this great land, who work hard for the day when a greater portion of your justice, and a more ample measure of your care for the poor and suffering, may prevail in these United States. Help us to see that a society’s greatness is found above all in the respect it shows for the weakest and neediest among us.

We beseech you, almighty God to shed your grace on this noble experiment in ordered liberty, which began with the confident assertion of inalienable rights bestowed upon us by you: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Thus do we praise you for the gift of life. Grant us the courage to defend it, life, without which no other rights are secure. We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected. Strengthen our sick and our elders waiting to see your holy face at life’s end, that they may be accompanied by true compassion and cherished with the dignity due those who are infirm and fragile.

We praise and thank you for the gift of liberty. May this land of the free never lack those brave enough to defend our basic freedoms. Renew in all our people a profound respect for religious liberty: the first, most cherished freedom bequeathed upon us at our Founding. May our liberty be in harmony with truth; freedom ordered in goodness and justice. Help us live our freedom in faith, hope, and love. Make us ever-grateful for those who, for over two centuries, have given their lives in freedom’s defense; we commend their noble souls to your eternal care, as even now we beg the protection of your mighty arm upon our men and women in uniform.

We praise and thank you for granting us the life and the liberty by which we can pursue happiness. Show us anew that happiness is found only in respecting the laws of nature and of nature’s God. Empower us with your grace so that we might resist the temptation to replace the moral law with idols of our own making, or to remake those institutions you have given us for the nurturing of life and community. May we welcome those who yearn to breathe free and to pursue happiness in this land of freedom, adding their gifts to those whose families have lived here for centuries.

We praise and thank you for the American genius of government of the people, by the people and for the people. Oh God of wisdom, justice, and might, we ask your guidance for those who govern us: President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, Congress, the Supreme Court, and all those, including Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan, who seek to serve the common good by seeking public office. Make them all worthy to serve you by serving our country. Help them remember that the only just government is the government that serves its citizens rather than itself. With your grace, may all Americans choose wisely as we consider the future course of public policy.

And finally Lord, we beseech your benediction on all of us who depart from here this evening, and on all those, in every land, who yearn to conduct their lives in freedom and justice. We beg you to remember, as we pledge to remember, those who are not free; those who suffer for freedom’s cause; those who are poor, out of work, needy, sick, or alone; those who are persecuted for their religious convictions, those still ravaged by war.

And most of all, God Almighty, we thank you for the great gift of our beloved country.

For we are indeed “one nation under God,” and “in God we trust.”

So dear God, bless America. You who live and reign forever and ever.

Amen!

Democrats Scream RACISM! So What Else is New?

Mitt Romney - Caricature

Mitt Romney – Caricature

Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a former Governor in perhaps the most liberal state in the nation, Massachusetts. He’s also a former Pastor and long time volunteer in his church. He quit his highly lucrative position at a company he helped found, Bain Capital, in order to work for free, no salary, for the Salt Lake City Olympics. He did likewise as Massachusetts Governor. He took no salary. Mitt Romney also gave away all of his substantial inheritance following the death of his father; making Brigham Young University the recipient and establishing the George W. Romney Institute of Public Management.

In addition to all these and many more acts of kindness, generosity, and philanthropy Mitt Romney is also a racist! And he’s responsible for the death, some would say murder, of a woman in Missouri in 2006. Or so Democrats would have you believe.

The Democratic National Convention convenes today in North Carolina and leading into it was word from the blog-ous-fere that Mitt Romney has adopted a 1920s Ku Klux Klan slogan for his Presidential campaign slogan. They say Romney has on a couple of occasions uttered the words “Keep America American“, and that the phrase can be traced by at least two sources back to KKK recruiting material from the 1920s, and continually used up until 1950.

My first question is how does uttering ANY phrase “a couple of times” constitute adopting a slogan? The simple answer is it doesn’t. Romney’s campaign slogan adopted in April 2011 and used to this day is “Believe in America”. Furthermore, as pointed out in this snopes.com report

Romney has on a couple of occasions said “Keep America America”, not the KKK phrase.

The murder of the Missouri woman claim stems from a Pro-Obama television campaign ad that shows a hard-core democratic radical who’s manufacturing plant  was closed down by Bain Capital in approximately 2003, after Romney had left Bain. The closing of the plant caused the man to lose his health care coverage. His wife had cancer and died. Of course THAT would be Romney’s fault, according to Democrats. Well, as absurd as that conclusion is based on the commercials claims and inferences it gets worse when the facts are actually injected into this fairy tale. The woman actually HAD health insurance coverage through her own employment. She wasn’t diagnosed with cancer until 2004, after the closing of the plant. And she didn’t pass-away until 2006. And yet, Democrats felt comfortable inferring that Romney caused her death.

The silly season is no longer silly. It unbelievably stupid!

Jimmy the Idiot Boy

A Democratic idiot

Those who would seem to think a racist and a murderer could reside inside the same body as the man who’s documented and demonstrated acts of generosity exceed any Presidential candidate you’ve ever heard of in your lifetime have to remove their imbecile hats and return to Cluelessville.

Is it too much to ask for Democrats to quit believing that Republicans are so completely hateful? Considering at least half the nation is Republican or Conservative I have to wonder how such so-called human beings can function. Think about it Democrats, depending on where you live in this great country a minimum of 1-in-3 people you encounter are Republican or Conservative in their politics. Were they as hateful and evil as you and your party portray why is it that you don’t deliver a well-deserved karate chop to the larynx of every other person you pass on the street? How do you leave your house? Clearly if you are surrounded by such evil haters you would be fully justified in barricading yourself in a fortified home encircled by a moat and 20 foot smooth cement walls.

This is the crux of Democrat’s arguments. Republicans are not only wrong, they’re evil. And this is what we will hear coming out of North Carolina. We can thank our President Barack Obama for this hate filled rhetoric.

DOWNFALL OF THE "COMMUNITY ORGANIZER"

Save your breath Libs. I already know your retort to this blog. “Well, Republicans do the same thing!” First of all, no they don’t. No credible Republican or Republican campaign advertisement has now or in 2008 discussed the extremist views on Obama, the birther crap or socialist/communist conspiracy nonsense. Second, can we agree that accusing someone of organized racism and murder are quite worse than saying he’s being disingenuous about his place of birth and that his far-left liberal philosophy is in-fact socialist? I would hope the 2nd point would be inarguable. But then again, Democrats made the allegations; there’s no telling just how stupid they really are.

And Democrats need not take their insult out on me with angry words. I’d be much more impressed if you simply told all those who believe as you that such hateful, divisive claims of racism and evil were not worthy of the party of Kennedy, Truman, FDR, and Jefferson.
