Kids Should be More Afraid of Their Parents than Police

I was watching some classic Richard Pryor last Friday night, Richard Pryor Live in Concert, when he started talking about kids.

In the segment above you see him portraying a little kid so afraid of getting in trouble with his parents that he lies to them.

In this brief segment, he talks about his parenting philosophy:

It was then that it occurred to me that Richard Pryor was wrong and his parents were right. Kids have lost their fear of their parents in this day and age. And it means kids have lost their respect for their parents too often as well.

For the record, I am not advocating BEATING your kids. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with a spanking when appropriate and not done in anger. No parent should ever punish their child in anger. My Dad use to punish me in anger all the time and nearly 40 years later I still resent it. And if other kids are like I was, I often didn’t understand why I was being punished or why I was being punished so severely.

But on the few run-ins with law enforcement I had in my youth I can tell you I was more concerned with what my Dad would do and think than I was concerned with police or courtrooms or jail. They couldn’t hold a candle to my fear of what would happen at home.

My father never beat me. Richard Pryor talked about his Mama “kicking his ass”, but my guess is “kicking his ass” amounted to a switch across his backside. When I was little my brother and I got a wooden kitchen spoon across our bottoms when being disciplined. I did not want that! Thinking about it now and I can’t imagine such a device cause me any pain. But at the time, that spoon was terrifying.

And even the spoon was retired by the time I was 12 years old. By that age I was already taller than my Dad, so him getting physical with me was pretty limited. By age 16 it was non-existent. But that didn’t change my fear of him. Getting in trouble with my Dad was just about the worst thing I could do. Trouble with teachers, coaches and even police paled in comparison. And as it turned out, I grew into being a fairly successful man (I actually consider myself very successful because of the people in my life).

Being fearful of your parents does not mean you don’t love them and respect them. If you are a believer in The Bible numerous passages tell us to fear God. Deuteronomy 6:13 says, “It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.” Ecclesiastes 5:7 says, “For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear.” But numerous Biblical directives tell us to love God. Mark 12:30 says, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” And, obviously there are numerous others. A kids feelings toward their parents can and should be the same balance between fear and love.

Do parents fear disciplining their kids because their kids won’t like them? On the subject of discipline kidshealth.org writes: “If parents don’t stick to the rules and consequences they set up, their kids aren’t likely to either.”

As teenagers we all tried to get away with as much as we could with our parents. But the extent of what kids now get away seems to be far beyond what it use to be. Drug and alcohol use is up compared to 20 years ago. Teen birth rates climbed tremendously from 1940 to a peak in 1994 of 45.8 births per 1000 teens. It’s decline since then coincides directly with increased abstinence education; showing that teaching kids what they don’t want to hear actually works. Yet births to unwed mothers, many teenagers, has reached record levels.

On the positive side high school dropout rates have declined over the long-term. And teen criminal activity has also declined, at best, or remained static at worst. It depends on what you read.

I’ll be curious what statistics show about the past 3-5 years when such information is more readily available. Bad economic times can translate into bad social behavior. Whether that remains true, time will tell.

If you thought this blog was going to be about how bad things are compared with “the good ol’ days”, I’m sorry to disappoint. Education has gone a long way to overcome a lot of what ails individuals in society. But most of that education comes from better educated parents, and much of that education comes from good, loving parents unafraid to put the fear of God into their kids.

When Does a Life Begin Having Rights?

The artificial argument created by the Obama Re-Election Administration(and Yes I termed them that way intentionally) over women’s birth control has gained more steam than I dreamed possible. Democrats like Nancy Pelosi have termed this artificial, non-existent fight the Republican’s War on Women.

Republicans War on Women at the State Level we...

I am seldom surprised by the gullibility of the American electorate, but must admit this time, I’m dumbfounded. Obama and his minions have successfully managed to divide and enrage people with reasonable and differing views where mostly quiet co-existence had existed for the past 50 years.

Are Conservatives actively trying to impede women’s access to birth control? Puhhhhleeeezzz! If you believe so show some balls. Comment on this blog and tell us all where those impediments exist.

Trying to de-fund Planned Parenthood, you say? That is more about cutting wasteful government spending and abortion than it is about contraception. And Planned Parenthood would not cease to exist were the Federal Government gifts to their operating budget cut off. PP can and would continue to receive generous private donations. In fact, it could be argued that their revenue would actually grow from empowered liberals coming to the rescue of this liberal iconic venue.

Liberals: your next ploy would be to throw up Catholics resistance and outrage to the Obama Health and Human Service Administration’s birth control mandate. This mandate was announced in January after a GOP Presidential debate in which

by asking the seemingly illogical, and uncalled for question “Can state’s disallow health care plans from offering contraception coverage?” Romney correctly pointed out that nobody wants to block contraception coverage. And he said it again, and again and again because Stephanopoulos kept asking; clearly indicating his mission from Democratic headquarters. Catholics righteous condemnation of the HHS mandate is totally and completely about religious freedom, not contraception. Were Catholic Church employees not able to have contraception paid for by their employer-provided health care plan they would not be denied contraception. They would merely be denied having contraception paid for, in part or in whole, by a Catholic Church that views it as a grave sin.

For the record I am telling YOU any of YOU who continue to argue that there is a Republican War on Women and a woman’s “right” to contraception that you are either stupid, impossibly ill-informed, or so hateful and bias in your political views that intelligent discussion with you is pointless. Move on. Don’t talk to me.

I find the whole subject remarkable in its divisiveness. Fifty years after creation of “the pill” and forty years after Roe vs. Wade this country won’t allow itself a sensible middle ground on reproductive rights because neither political side is willing to budge from their extreme positions; positions the vast majority of this country find unacceptable. Pro-Choice advocates want abortion on demand up to and including the partial birth of a living human baby. In other words they continue to advocate infanticide for convenience purposes. Outrageous!

Nearly, but not quite, as outrageous is the Pro-Life position that life begins at conception; that a fertilized egg represents life. Take that fertilized egg out of the womb and see how long it lives, and by what means its given nutrition. Answer those questions and you clearly don’t have life without the woman, the mother. Thus her rights remain paramount.

Neither Pro-life nor Pro-Choice can agree on what seems abundantly obvious to me. Life begins neither at conception, nor at birth, but somewhere in between. And since we’re talking about a LIFE, an individual, and all the God-given and Constitutional rights there-in bestowed upon that individual and the Federal Government’s required protection of that individual’s rights; shouldn’t we error on the side of protecting that life?

If a Pro-choice advocate says that a crying, wiggling baby not more than sixty seconds into the open air from their mother’s birth canal is Constitutionally protected and given rights under our Federal Constitution but that same PERSON had zero rights 61-seconds earlier…that’s just plain and simply unacceptable both logically, morally, and legally.

The great statesman Patrick Henry correctly noted “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government.” So restraining a woman’s right to control her own reproduction system should only be imposed when those rights infringe upon the rights of another whose rights also deserve protecting.

So, though I’m Catholic,

Constitution of the United States of America

Constitution of the United States of America

I acknowledge we are not a theocracy and Catholics can’t impose their beliefs on the populace any more than Muslims can or should. Therefore contraception is and should always remain available. So should abortion up until its determined when life begins.

When life begins is a question beyond my pay grade, to use a phrase made famous by Barrack Obama when he successfully dodged the same question during the 2008 Presidential race. But any idiot can agree it occurs well before a natural, healthy birth following a nine month pregnancy.

Unlike other posts of mine I broach this dangerous subject not for the purpose of starting debate but with the sincere hope of ending it. Let logic and reason, not religion or emotion prevail.

Why it Sucks to be Conservative!

I’ve always believed that being liberal is a lot like being a child whining at Mommy in the grocery store check out line, “Mommy can we get the giant Snickers? Mommy why can’t we get the comic book? Mommy that man’s getting ice cream. Why can’t we get ice cream?”

On the other hand Conservatives have to play Mommy. They have to be the adult.

In this video Bill Whittle explains better how being the mature adult Conservative really SUCKS!

Coaches Behaving Badly

Yesterday was a remarkable day in the world of sports news. Two highly successful coaches were the subjects of criticism. One for opening his mouth, the other for opening his fly. And in each case they showed a continuing lack of morals and wisdom.

Photograph of Coach Bobby Petrino at the 2010 ...

Coach Bobby Petrino

Bobby Petrino was fired as head coach of the University of Arkansas football team. Ozzie Guillen should be fired as Manager of the Major League Baseball Miami Marlins.

The Razorback is the mascot of the University ...

As I understand the facts of Petrino’s case he deserves some sort of prize for possessing the largest testicles since Rod Blagojevich. While vacationing with his family the 51-year old Petrino went for a motorcycle ride, where he met up with his 25-year-old mistress. Together they managed to wreck his Harley Davidson, Apparently driving it into a ditch. Knowing he was in trouble Petrino asked that a witness to the accident not call 9-1-1. Petrino called an aide who came and picked up him and Jessica Dorrell. If I have the story straight, the girlfriend was dropped off at her car and Petrino was taken to the hospital. (And while having an inappropriate relationship with the 51 year old, married football coach with four kids, did I also mention Dorrell had a fiance`?)

The Arkansas Razorbacks football program is a highly visible top-notch program. Last year they finished 11-2 as the 5th ranked team in the country. Playing in the South Eastern Conference, they were expected to compete for a National Championship this year.

While not advocating Petrino’s affair with Dorrell, that was not his fireable mistake. There were several. When questioned by his employer and media about his accident Petrino lied. He said he was the only one on the bike. Later, a police report revealed the presence of Dorrell. Also, 3 days prior to this April 1 motorcycle accident Petrino had hired Dorrell to his staff. In doing so he failed to reveal his intimate relationship with the former Arkansas volleyball player to his boss, Athletic Director Jeff Long.

Petrino took the Arkansas job in 2007 when he unexpectedly quit on the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons only 13 games into their season, showing himself then to be a rat. Long fired that rat yesterday, for cause, thus eliminating any right Petrino had to an $18-million buy-out clause in his contract. Long made the correct decision.

Now, if only the Miami Marlins owner Jeff Loria would make the same decision with Guillen.

Ozzie Guillén managed the White Sox from 2004 ...

The former Chicago White Sox Manager has a mouth that never stops. For those like me who aren’t easily offended his bombasity is endearing. He says some of the most outrageous stuff, including last week when he told reporters he likes to get drunk after every game, win or lose.

But when he told a Time Magazine reporter that he “Loves Fidel Castro“, he disqualified himself from ever Managing the Miami Marlins. Let me be clear. Were he still in Chicago, or managing any other Major League team, his comment would be chalked up as Ozzie-being-Ozzie. It would be largely unimportant. In fact Guillen said much the same thing in a 2008 interview with a Chicago reporter and nothing came of it.

But the Marlins just built a new $624-million palace stadium in the community of Miami known as Little Havana. Dade County, Florida is more than 50% Latino and most of those are Cuban immigrants or their descendants. The Cuban Dictator who has run the authoritarian communist regime 90-miles south of Miami for the past 50 years is their sworn enemy. City and County leaders in Miami have already called for Ozzie Guillen to be the former Manager of the Miami Marlins. Protesters demonstrated outside the location of Guillen’s nationally televised apology yesterday. He offended his teams entire fan-base. Apology or not he doesn’t belong in Miami.

The Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Español: El líd...

And any leftist wacko, like Michael Moore, who agrees with Guillen and likes the murderous dictator with the long ugly beard…your opinion doesn’t count. It doesn’t count because you are not a tax paying citizen of Dade County Florida or ticket buying fan of the Miami Marlins.  It doesn’t matter what I think of Castro. And as I mentioned earlier, any other city on the country, it wouldn’t matter that Guillen loves a man who has enslaved a whole island of human beings and denied democratic elections, and imprisoned political opponents, killing many for more than 50 years. But in Miami it matters.

Guillen’s insensitivity and stupidity just one week into his first season as Miami Manager displays a callous disregard for those he serves. Fire him. Because there is one thing you can be sure of with Ozzie…he’ll do it again.

The fact that Bobby Petrino is a self-absorbed, morally questionable person and Ozzie Guillen is a self-absorbed loud mouth with questionable beliefs is perfectly OK, if that’s what they want to be. But it’s equally OK for their employers to determine such people are not the type of people we want representing our multi-million dollar enterprise. Arkansas came to that conclusion. The Marlins should.
