Man with the Golden Voice

One year ago at this time all of America was a-gag over a new celebrity created by YouTube.

And I was being un-friended and excoriated by so-called friends on Facebook because I was skeptical of  Ted Williams, the man known as The Man with the Golden Voice. One year later my skepticism proved spot-on and my friends probably don’t even remember the hurt they caused me. They ripped me for not jumping on their love fest of this man.

If you don’t remember, or if you were out of the country for the month of January 2011 Williams became famous overnight based on the posting of this video: Homeless Man gets National Buzz

Following the fame of this video, the man was quickly picked up off the street and cleaned up. His hair was cut. Someone got him new clothes and he made an appearance on the Today Show. Numerous other TV appearances followed. His handlers took him to meet with his mother who he’d not seen or spoken with in about 20 years. In each TV appearance Williams told those interviewing him that he had given up drugs and alcohol abuse and as you saw on the video that he’d been clean for two years. Job offers started pouring in, including an offer to serve as the P-A announcer for the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team.

I didn’t believe him; and while I didn’t publish those thoughts specifically I did say I “expected another shoe to drop”. I found it hard to believe that this man was STILL living on the streets, pan-handling two years after being sober. Clearly the man has a talent and a skill that through a sober mind could be monetized in the form of a job.

I was also disgusted by the job opportunities that came his way. Why should this homeless criminal alcoholic drug addict get a shot at some very lucrative voice-talent opportunities when so many people IN MY INDUSTRY were unemployed AND sober. That was my thinking.

Turns out Williams wasn’t and hadn’t been clean and sober. He continued to drink heavily. While continuing to fool people he did manage a few jobs including this Kraft Macaroni and Cheese commercial: Kraft Mac & Cheese commercial

Williams apparently was checked into a rehab clinic which he left before completing. The most recent news on him that I have been able to discern dates from last August 2011 in which he was filing a lawsuit  against three people that he claims took advantage of his addictions to cut themselves a sweet deal. Williams explains in court papers that when he inked the deal he was dealing with “significant drug and alcohol abuse” issues and was “totally incapable of understanding what was happening to him or handling his own affairs.”  He is asking a judge to void the contract.

What he’s doing now is not public and I’ve not been able to find out.

My point is now, and was one year ago, that stories of redemption are great and they are inspiring. But lets first make sure that the redemption has actually taken place and is praiseworthy before heaping riches and lots of responsibilities onto those who are undeserving and unprepared. Mr. Williams was clearly undeserving compared to so many other radio and broadcast veterans who are struggling and don’t abuse alcohol or drugs; and apparently Williams was unprepared.

Secondly, stories of redemption should never trump those who never needed redemption to begin with. And so many of us need and are given second chances in one or more aspects of our lives, I wonder how many realize that good, honest, hard-working, people really do exist. And while not perfect, nobody is; these people who trudge along in life and avoid the mistakes and temptations that Ted Williams did not seldom get the praise they deserve. They seldom get half of what Williams received, before he again apparently pissed it away.

An email to Total Broadcasting video customers

What follows is an email sent today to Total Broadcasting monthly video customers:

Friends,

Español: Logo Vectorial de YouTube

YouTube this month dramatically changed its channel format. The goals of the change appear to be toward making YouTube more “social” friendly. In other words to allow for more comments and interactions for visitors to YouTube. The changes are also particularly helpful to those who have lots of content (i.e. Monthly videos) on their channels. It’s all good and its all going to benefit the wise decision you have already made to use video to help market you and/or your business. The YouTube changes for now remain optional. For the time being you can maintain your channel in the old format. I don’t know yet whether that option is indefinite or whether a cutoff date has been established for when your channel will automatically be changed to the new layout.

To give you some sense of the changes look at our Total Broadcasting Channel for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/user/msradioman?feature=mhum

What is really exciting is that I am able to apply all the important links for our company on the screen immediately to the left of the Featured video. In our case I have 8 websites connected to me or Total Broadcasting posted from Twitter to Yelp.

If you are one who subscribes to Total Broadcasting’s video upload service we have not changed your channel to the new format but will do so when we next upload a video in about a week; unless you instruct us otherwise. I would advise that you go ahead with this change. My guess is that there is a time when the change will occur anyway, and in the meantime your channel will be one of the few that merely looks OLD and not up to date. Of course you can sign in to your own account and change your channel to the new format yourself any time you wish. You don’t have to wait for us to do it for you.

To learn more about the changes on YouTube watch the videos and read the blog on this link: http://sheexperts.com/youtubelayout/

FACEBOOK:

The changes on Facebook are ALL about making your decision to use video that much better. Facebook’s Timeline will go into effect for everyone on December 24th if you have not already made the change. So far the changes seem to only apply to personal and not to business pages. I can’t imagine that will continue.

But what is really exciting about this is that photos and videos are made much, much more prominent in the Timeline format and can be especially “Featured” by you should you choose, and you should.

You made a good decision in choosing video for your marketing and increasingly the internet is making that decision look better and better. Thank you for choosing Total Broadcasting.

Merry Christmas. Happy New Year.

Word of Mouth needs a hand.

Get to know the internet

I’m going to make a statement that will send shivers down the spine of long time business people. It’ll cause concern and disagreement and it will do so primarily because it will cause all business people to rethink and renew how they go about maintaining their business.Word of mouth advertising doesn’t work any more. At least it doesn’t work without a little help. But fortunately help is available.

Many longtime business owners have always relied on word of mouth advertising as their vehicle to drive home to them new clients. They worked hard to provide good service and a good product and relied on customers to tell others of how wonderful they were. Word of mouth advertising was the best marketing conversion tool they had.

For many or most of these businesses recent years have seen a drop in business. We’re in a national recession (or technically, WERE) so a drop in business can be expected, right? In the mind of the old-time business person all they need to do is hang on and keep providing good service and the economy will bounce back and things will be good as new. But as we emerge from this significant economic slow down anyone who relies only on word of mouth advertising is going to be disappointed to find out that their business may never bounce back to where it was and may eventually suffer enough lack of new business that the business as a whole will fail.

When a referral for a business service comes my way more often than not I’m given little more than a person or companies name and maybe a phone number or a location of business. In determining whether I use this referral my first step is to look them up…on the internet. If out and about my Galaxy Tab tablet computer gives me instant internet access and I punch in what info I have into a Google search

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...

. If it can wait until I’m home (or if I’m there already) I do the same. I take the referral information I have and conduct a Google search for the business or service referred.

Now pretend with me for a moment what happens when that business or service cannot be seen or found in my Google search results.

1. Do I call that business anyway?

2. Do I conduct another search using keywords I think might bring the referred business to Google’s attention?

3. Or do I click on a link to another business who has caught my eye in the Google search results?

Option number 1 happens seldom. Option 2 occurs with more frequency. But when it does I’m often still left unsatisfied. Option 3, in which I begin the process of taking my business elsewhere happens more often than the others and with increasing frequency. This process is repeated by normal Americans everyday. And every day business with no internet presence lose that business to those who have an internet presence.

Word of mouth needs a hand because the process I just described is so easy for everyone. Google searches at home or at the office and now out and about on your smart phone or tablet allow all of us to quickly check on all referrals to determine their validity and whether we want to take the next step and call them.

Websites can be the answer to your lack of search engine results. Even a small and undistinguished website can be found by Google. But if you don’t have the time or money to develop or maintain a website, or if your site doesn’t come up first in a Google search the above stated scenario can be repeated.

Word of mouth advertising needs a hand.

When you open a YouTube account for a company profile video, or a Facebook Fan Page, or a Blog on WordPress or similar site, or you Post a profile page on LinkedIn.com

you can spend zero dollars and only a small amount of time. But the results are instantaneous and the problem of having zero internet presence is solved immediately.

Besides the business and social media sites mentioned above, there are an ever increasing number of directories on the internet that may already have some information on your business. But a lot of that information may be wrong and may be minuscule. Sites like Citysearch, Manta, Merchant Circle and others are out their with your information; but unless you claim them and expand on that information they are not likely to appear high in a Google search result. Claim them, and even if you have little else on the internet you can at least count on being found on a first page Google search when someone types in your specific name.

So here is what you do to help your word of mouth advertising. Get a presence on the internet. Start by conducting a Google search for yourself or your business or both. Visit every link in which your information appears; and don’t stop on the first or even the second page. Claim the pages you find with your basic business information. Usually its little more than a name an address and a phone number. Claim it by clicking on the link on the page that reads “Business Owner?” or “Is this your business?” or something similar. Then follow the steps to fill in the information it asks. If it allows you to upload photos, then upload photos. If it allows you to upload video…you’ve struck GOLDUpload a video. No video? Get one.

Fill out all the information completely and thoroughly. Then move on to the next search result, and repeat the process.

Lastly, if typing your name and business produces nothing on a first or even second page Google search result. Do nothing else until you have opened a Fan Page on Facebook, a Google email account and business profile, and a free LinkedIn and Biznik account.

Now you’ve done THE MINIMUM. Now you’ve given word of mouth a fighting chance.
